Model United Nations: Students of International Relations of the VSUES discuss important agendas on global issues

2 декабря 2021 International Relations

Model UN is a unique opportunity to feel like a real diplomat, on whose words and decisions the well-being of all countries of the world depends. The topics discussed the work in committees, the presentation of the country's position on a certain agenda, the writing of resolutions — all this is as close as possible to the real conditions of work in the United Nations. Students of the Department of International Relations and Law took part in the IX Yekaterinburg International Model of the United Nations.

Third year student of the Institute of Law (direction "International Relations") Anastasia Voron-Kovalskaya:

— We represented China and the Philippines in the Committee on the Status of Women. All the work was in English. Having started preparing for the UN Model, we realized that there was not enough general knowledge about gender inequality at all — we had to read a lot, study, including English-language literature, and work with UN resolutions on their website. This is a very time-consuming, but incredibly interesting process. We felt like real diplomats: we expressed the positions of our country (China, the Philippines), based on the real interests of the countries in this matter, studied the topic at a level that allows us not just to discuss, but also to understand the problem, to offer concrete solutions. The final stage was the adoption of a resolution written by all members of the committee. It was three productive days of work with very pleasant organizers and participants. We managed to make acquaintances with people from different parts of the country.

Third year student of the Institute of Law (direction "International Relations") Catherine Thier:

— This was my first experience of participating in such an event. First, I want to say that this conference game is extremely useful for international students, as it gives them the opportunity to unleash their potential. Preparation of the country's position on a certain issue, debates and collective discussion of the agenda, joint drafting of the final resolution with the "delegates" of other countries - all this can form the necessary competencies for the future career of an international relations specialist. Participation in the UN model has become a valuable experience for me, which has shown in which aspects of my future professional activity I am strong, and what is worth paying special attention to. The model helped us to feel like real diplomats who are solving global problems of humanity here and now, to practice English and make new acquaintances.

Head of the Department of International Relations and Law Roman Grivanov:

— Model UN is a very popular and widespread youth movement around the world, which combines the possibility of professional development for young international experts and a way of communicating students and young professionals interested in this field of activity. At one time, it was at the VSUES that the first UN model in the Russian Far East began to operate, and its first participants at the international level achieved results that can be proud. Now our students are also actively participating in the UN Models, improving their professional skills and preparing for a possible future career as a professional diplomat.
