VSUES changes its name

Vladivostok State University of Economics and Service say farewell to the prefix in its name. The Governor of Primorye, Oleg Kozhemyako, and the Russian Minister of Science and Higher Education, Valery Falkov supported the decision. As the head of the region stressed, the renaming will benefit not only the university itself, but also the entire Far East.

Tatiana Terenteva, VSUES Rector, Doctor of Economics, Professor, stressed that the need to rename the university was primarily due to a change in the strategic approaches to the university's development. Today the VSUES focuses on educational programs, which are among the priorities of the state and correspond with the demands of the regional economy. This includes such areas of education as engineering, information technology, and pedagogy.

— It makes no sense now to focus on the areas of study that were the main ones for us in the mid-90s and early noughties. We have long since gone beyond the University of Economics and Service and are positioning ourselves as a classical university. Economic and service areas now account for only 20% in the educational structure and tend to decrease further, said the VSUES rector.

The second «v» in the new name was not a coincidence: in this way, the university not only pays tribute to its native VladiVostok, but also retains the abbreviation VVSU, familiar to foreign colleagues.
