In the International Relations Department of VSUES an origami master-class took place. It was truly international: a Russian girl was teaching Japanese art to students from China, Korea and Canada! A 5th year student of the profile “Japanese regional studies” Ekaterina Pany has been involved with origami for a long time. Participants of the master-class learned many interesting facts about centuries of traditions of folding paper.

- There is no unified opinion regarding the question of where and how origami appeared, - said Ekaterina Pany. – According to one of the versions it was brought to Japan from China together with the first paper. As per the second opinion, the forebear of the contemporary origami is the art of compose figures out of pieces of cloths. This art exists nowadays – many of you have seen fancily folded napkins in restaurants.

Along with classical origami that intends composing figures out of a square sheet of paper, there is so called modular origami that consists in framing volume sculptures out of small-sized simple elements. There is also wet origami, in which edges of paper are getting dampened in order for lines to look more natural. Sculptures of animals and birds are most successful in the technique of wet origami.

In the course of the master-class the participants learned the main principles of working with paper, Type Codes and origami traditional techniques as well as folding the most known figure of a paper crane.
