VSUES has celebrated Thanksgiving Day

Foreign and Russian students of VSUES got together to celebrate a national American holiday – Thanksgiving Day. Students from the USA prepared a presentation devoted to this day. It was allowed to speak any language at the meeting, but both American and Korean students preferred to demonstrate their knowledge of Russian and communicated only in this language.
The American students told about history and traditions of the holiday and shared stories of how Thanksgiving Day was celebrated in their families.
One of the important attributes of the Thanksgiving Day is a festive table. It is traditional to dish up turkey filled with bread and cranberry sauce, yams, pies with pumpkin and apple filling. But every family has its own recipes and dishes.
Recipes of cooking turkey itself also differ. One of the most popular recipes is a refined variant of the dish - turducken (turkey+duck+chicken) where turkey is filled with a whole chicken and a duck. Turducken is very difficult to prepare, but according to most Americans it is worthwhile doing.
Thanksgiving Day is a family holiday which is usually celebrated at home. It also symbolizes the beginning of a Christmas season and many people sing Christmas songs at that day first time. In spite of the fact that the American students of VSUES were far from their motherland, they decided not to break traditions of Thanksgiving Day. They made baked potatoes for everybody and sang a Christmas song “Silent Night”.
In the end of the meeting every one of the present foreign and Russian students said to whom and for what they were grateful in the outgoing year. Everybody agreed that they were happy to have an opportunity to take part in such events.
