The Japanese stone garden Yoshio Morimoto, which has another official name – the Garden of Friendship Toyama - Vladivostok, appeared on the territory of VSUES almost 20 years ago.

The stone garden was created thanks to the investments of the well-known philanthropist Mr. Yoshio Morimoto, with the help of Japanese landscape and garden art professionals, with the assistance of the administrations of the Primorsky Krai and the city of Vladivostok and with the active participation of the VSUES team, which was then headed by Gennady Lazarev, who then and now serves as chairman «Friendship Society Vladivostok - Toyama».

During its existence, the «Toyama-Vladivostok» Association and the «Friendship Society Vladivostok-Toyama» have made many joint projects in the field of culture and social interaction, and the Japanese stone garden is one of them,  said Gennady Lazarev, President of the VSUES and Law and Parliament of the Primorsky Legislative Assembly the edges. - This is a popular place for meetings and joint walks among Vladivostok residents and city guests. Creating a rock garden, Yoshio Morimoto wanted people from different countries to imbue interest in each other's culture. And so it happened.

A unique object, made according to all the canons of Japanese landscape architecture, seamlessly fit into the space of the university and over the past two decades has become a favorite vacation spot. Students and teachers make every effort to keep it in its original form and in good condition, but time takes its toll, and today the stone garden needs reconstruction.

This week I was contacted by representatives of the Japanese consulate and they said that the project for the reconstruction of the Yoshio Morimoto Garden was approved at the level of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, said Vladimir Yanfa, secretary of the «Friendship Society Vladivostok-Toyama» and «Toyama Friends Club». - Due to the uncertain international situation, the Japanese side cannot yet determine the timing of the project, but we are in contact and as soon as the situation becomes clear, we will get to work.

Vladimir Yanfa clarified that Japanese stone garden of VSUES is perhaps the only stone garden in Russia, the restoration of which will be attended by the Japanese Foreign Ministry, since this particular object of landscape art is made according to all cultural and aesthetic canons and is an integral and completed architectural structure. The responsibility of the Japanese side in this case is to provide a specialist who will create a draft adjustment and will carry out field supervision of the work.

- Initially, Gennady Innokentievich emphasized that we do not need a garden, as in Japan, we need a real Japanese «sekitei», and its restoration is possible only under the guidance of the Japanese master - said Vladimir Yanfa.
