“Wings and Claws”: artists from Russia and China presented the mythical image of a dragon at an exhibition at VVSU
The Russian-Chinese exhibition “Searching Your Dragon” opened at the VVSU Museum and Exhibition Complex. This is one of the first events in the Primorsky krai held as part of the years of Culture between Russia and China.
560 people took part in the creative competition that preceded the exhibition. Young artists from Primorye and China presented the mythical image of a dragon, representing the features of different cultures and eras. In some paintings the dragon is depicted as a funny and cute creature, and in others it is a fearsome, majestic protector.
The exhibition was opened by the rector of VVSU, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor Tatiana Terenteva: “The exhibition within the walls of VVSU in honor of the Chinese New Year is a start for the series of cultural events in the Primorsky krai as part of the years of Culture of Russia - China. It is very important for both the Chinese and the Russian parties. This is not just an exhibition, but a unique event where we see paintings by young artists and famous masters from China, and by Russian children and VVSU students majoring in Design. I would like to note proudly to the authors how much love they have for Eastern culture, for the Dragon-the-Parton and for the traditions of the Chinese New Year, which is called the Spring Festival. I wish us all well-being, happiness, kindness, peace and prosperity, and a greater unity!”
The dragon is one of the most recognizable symbols of Asian culture. It is of great importance in the mythology of eastern countries and is depicted by artists in a variety of forms, techniques and on various materials. Thus, students of the Institute of Creative Industries expressed their views on the symbol of 2024 according to the Eastern calendar in graphics and digital design. Another part of the exhibition is presented by works of professional Chinese authors. At the exhibition you can see works by the famous graphic artist Hao Shouming, modern Chinese masters Li Dongsheng and Zheng Xingwo.
A special part of the exhibition is created by works of Chinese traditional crafts: hand-painted paper umbrellas and fans, items with cloisonné enamel, finely painted porcelain, ceramics, and calligraphic tools.
It should be noted that students and professors of the Institute of Creative Industries of VVSU, the regional center for identifying, developing and supporting talented children and youth “Sirius.Primorye” together with the Primorsky regional public organization “Society of Friendship with China” took part in organizing the project.
