An Exhibition of Calligraphy and Painting of the People's Republic of China Opened at VVSU
An exhibition of works by the Chinese School of Calligraphy and Painting “Gu Yuxuan” “Landscapes of the Heart” was solemnly opened at the VVSU Museum and Exhibition Complex. Viewers can enjoy 50 works made in different calligraphic styles and formats, as well as paintings in the genres of “mountains and waters” and “flowers and birds”. The exhibition is based on the works of the head of the Gu Yuxuan School of Calligraphy and Painting, Li Yehua.
“We have a unique opportunity to learn about traditional painting and calligraphy of China. I am always in awe of Chinese characters, especially when they are expressed in such a creative manner. I had an opportunity to master this art, but later I realized that I would only act as a viewer. Such events allow us to explore the culture of our neighbors and strengthen friendly relations,” said the first vice-rector of VVSU Sergei Golikov.
Calligraphy being the most revered art form in China, introduces high examples of philosophical and literary thought. At the exhibition you can see a series of calligraphic scrolls representing one of the main Buddhist texts - the Heart Sutra, poems by Li Yu and Su Shi, sayings of Lao Tzu and other philosophers. Thus, one of the scrolls reads: “The ancients said: “Nourish your heart with a stream of water, and you will learn to be quiet and surrounded by mountains.”
The title of the exhibition was born from a saying known among Chinese art connoisseurs: “With my own hand I paint my heart.” This is how they speak about the state of a master who has reached the heights of spirit and true freedom of creativity.
“I thank VVSU for the initiative and the opportunity to organize today’s exhibition. China and Russia are neighbors who maintain friendly relations. Exchanges between the PRC and the Russian Federation in the field of culture and art enrich the countries'' cultural understanding of each other through such events. This gives vitality and motivation in developing relationships,” said Li Yehua, head of the Gu Yuxuan School.
After the opening of the exhibition, the master gave a master class on calligraphy for students and professors of the university. Everyone was able to touch this subtle art and immerse themselves in the culture of the East.
